Sleep Quality of Surf Athletes

Introdução

From the beginning of surf origin to the present day where there are a pletora of world events, surf athletes present different training routines and strategies for the practice of the modality. Therefore, it is important that surfers have good quality of sleep allowing the body to restore its functionality.

Objetivo

The aim of the study was to evaluate the sleep quality of surf athletes.

Métodos

To achieve this objective, 41 surf athletes of both sexes answered questionnaires on sleep quality (Pittsburgh), chronotype (Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire), sleepiness (Epworth), athletes' sleep behavior (Athlete Sleep Behavior Questionnaire), and finally, the surfers answered an anamnesis containing questions about health conditions, medication consumption, injury history and training routine. The questionnaires were answered by an online platform (google forms) after the athletes accepted the ethical conditions of the experiment.

Resultados

The results were first analyzed using the Kolmogorov Smirnov normality test and then the t test for independent samples was applied. The sample consisted of 16 men and 25 women, and the general results of the sample (n=41) showed a predominance of moderate morning chronotype (score 60), good sleep latency (23 minutes), good sleep efficiency (88%), Pittsburgh questionnaire score of 5 points, the athletes also did not have excessive sleepiness (8 points). Regarding the sleep behavior assessed by the ASBQ questionnaire, the athletes showed a moderate perception of the influence of sleep on their sports performance (37 points). When comparing the genders, we noticed a statistical difference in the time of practice of the sport, with a longer time of practice for males (18 years/men and 6 years/women). No statistically significant differences were found in the variables related to sleep quality for both genders.

Conclusões

Thus, in conclusion of this study it is possible to observe that surf athletes had a good quality of sleep, in addition to a predominance of the morning chronotype (60%), followed by indifferent (40%).
