CLINICAL-EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE OF PATIENTS TREATED FOR SLEEP DISORDERS AT THE SLEEP OUTPATIENT CLINIC IN THE AMAZONAS STATE CAPITAL

Introdução

Sleep is a special physiological state for all living things. Sleep disorders affect quality of life and increase the risk of metabolic, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. The third edition of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD-3) classifies them into six large groups: insomnia, sleep breathing disorders, central disorders of hypersomnolence, circadian rhythm disorders, parasomnias and sleep-related movement disorders

Objetivo

This study aimed to discover the clinical and epidemiological profile of patients treated at the outpatient clinic specialized in sleep disorders, of the public otolaryngology and cervico-facial surgery service in the city of Manaus, AM, Brazil, between January 2019 and May 2021

Métodos

This is a cross-sectional, observational, descriptive and analytical study that was carried out by analyzing medical records. The data for the analyzed sample were obtained from 72 medical records after the approval of the local Ethics Committee (CAAE 47110721.4.0000.9167)

Resultados

It was observed that sleep disorders had a higher prevalence in females, and predominated in the age group 51-60 years. Regarding lifestyle habits, both sexes showed a link to alcohol consumption (32.26%), tobacco use (11.1%) and 73.69% were overweight. Regarding the use of medications, 44.68% of patients reported using some hypnotic type of medicine. In the item comorbidities, systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) was highlighted in 44.62% of the analyzed individuals. The most frequent diagnosis was obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (45.5%), which is compatible with the finding that 35.59% of the individuals had grade IV Mallampati

Conclusões

Statistically, none of these variables were shown to interfere with sleep quality when assessed using the chi-square test. Via the results, it was concluded that, in this specialized service, most of the consultations involve overweight women, and that obstructive sleep apnea is the most prevalent disorder
